Old Murray School/Heritage Center
St. Raymonds Church
Michael Murray, his sister Eleanor, and Jeremiah Fallon were born in Elphin county Roscommon Ireland and stepped off a ship in 1833. Jeremiah met Eleanor and Michael while travelling on the ship. He later married Eleanor. After being separated for a while Eleanor was reunited with her brother as he made plans to travel west. They agreed to join him and later travelled to California by wagon train (initially in the same group as the famed "Donner Party"). After spending time at Mission San Jose, they eventually made their way to the Valley and purchased land from Jose Maria Amador.
When Alameda County was formed, the Dublin area was named Murray Township, after Michael Murray. He and Jeremiah soon donated land and helped build the first school in the valley (also named Murray). The school, along with St. Raymond's Church, the Dublin Cemetery, and the Green Store are all historical sites that still exist and are located on Donlon Way (just off of Dublin Blvd.) The school is now being used as the Dublin Heritage Center. I highly recommend making a trip to the Heritage Center as there is so much more information available about Dublin and the other cities in the Valley. Also, the library has a section on area history.
There is not as much specific information on the area of Schaefer Ranch. The area was inside Rancho San Lorenzo, but it was later called El Camino Rancho. It is not currently known who Castro sold the land to, but eventually Peter Hoare purchased the land sometime in the late 1800's. Hoare was originally from San Francisco, but went to work and live in Limerick (now San Ramon) and Dublin areas. He eventually bought the land in that area and later became the Alameda County road supervisor for that Dublin Canyon section. He later married Hannah Brickell and had two daughters (one who was named Alma). Alma later married Dr. Eggert.
